Rune Solvang has written orchestral music and chamber music for various ensembles, as well as solo works for a wide range of instruments. In his works, he cultivates the intersection between avant-garde jazz, indie-rock and modern compositional music. Sometimes the works will contain improvisation, sometimes very complex or very simple and almost spiritual music.
The world is a diverse patchwork of different cultures that are becoming increasingly accessible, and this is reflected in Rune Solvang's music with stylistic contrasts. He is very interested in political issues, which often form the basis of his works. In some works, there are clear political or socially critical messages.
Rune Solvang's music has been performed at festivals such as Nordic Music Days, Pulsar and the Faroese festival Summartónar, and his orchestral works have been performed by Copenhagen Phil, the South Jutland Symphony Orchestra and The Danish Sinfonietta. He received the Composer Hakon Børresen and wife Nanna Børresen's grant in 2024.
Rune Solvang is a member of Grundtonen, a composers' collective that plays concerts with their own music.

I: The Great Hall
II: The Settlement
III: The Temple
A work about places and buildings from ancient times that we see around the world as ruins and during archaeological excavations. These are the large hall belonging to the king or chieftain, the settlement where daily life has unfolded, the temple with religious worship and finally the tomb that was supposed to signal status and grandeur even in death.

Procession of the Species
2021
Chamber orchestra
Today, the unfolding of life and the struggle for existence is very much about the climate and the preservation of nature. Animals and plants have suddenly gained a voice to a much greater extent than before. Furthermore, it has been found that intelligence is not only reserved for humans. In The Procession of Species, there is room for both fast-running animals and the quieter existences.
Procession of the Species was written for The Danish Sinfonietta's composer competition on the occasion of the orchestra's 75th anniversary, and Rune Solvang participated in the final among the six best with this work.

Skullfucking
2018
Narrator, piano
Text: Peder Frederik Jensen
Skullfucking is a collaborative project with Peder Frederik Jensen, where Rune Solvang has set music to an excerpt from Peder Frederik Jensen's book of the same name. The text takes place in a post-apocalyptic world devastated by wars, climate change and natural disasters. With his scanty possessions - a book, a pointed match, a club and a pipe - and well marked by the horrors of war and the disintegration of the known world, the protagonist has sought refuge in a sanatorium with an expectation of fresh air and eternal oblivion.

We live in a time where it becomes more and more common for people to meditate. It can be a pleasurable break from a hectic everyday life for rest and contemplation. Where it used to be associated with something religious, such as Buddhism, today there is also non-religious meditation such as mindfulness. Furthermore, it has been discovered that meditative music can heal, and today you can get music on prescription. The three meditations form a suite that is played only in pianissimo.

There are 4 ways that music can be produced. The music can be random, i.e. different each time, or written down, i.e. the same every time. At the same time, it can be structured, where a system or a formula devised in advance determines how the music should sound, or it can be freely designed. And if you combine these possibilities, you get 4 ways that are represented in the 4 sections of the piece. The first is aleatoric, the second is system-composed, the third is impulsively composed and the last is improvised. In the aleatory section, the musical outcome is determined by rolling dice. The same system is used in the following section. The impulsively composed section contains, among other things, a kind of adapted recapitulation of the system-composed section, and the piece ends with an improvisation that gradually becomes free. The piece is also for 4 very different instruments: a wind instrument, a string instrument, a percussion instrument and a keyboard instrument.

See me! See me!
2002-03
Concert band
- an allegory about the Danish pop culture ... and the new clothes
